    Imagine living life with Schizophrenia but having no idea. Today's conversation is with a special guest, my childhood friend Dr. Apollo Ellis. He is known as one of Silicon Valley's top programmers in the tech industry, but the road to get there was incredibly difficult.

    The connection between schizophrenia and drug abuse From addiction, depression and ultimately a diagnosis of Schizophrenia, his story is no short of a miracle, and certainly the outcome of a deep desire to be more in life. Apollo and I had shared in the madness of addiction and the streets as teenagers, we were truly lost in the wilderness.

     We were amongst the worst within our circle of friends. Through the Valley: Streets, Schizophrenia, and Success in Tech Apollo Ellis's journey from the streets of the 1990s San Francisco Bay Area to the heights of Silicon Valley is a tale of extraordinary resilience. Growing up in a world dominated by hip-hop and street culture, he faced daunting circumstances. Narrow escapes from the drug game and gang violence left their marks in the form of PTSD and addiction.

    Homelessness and Schizophrenia Homeless at the age of twenty, Apollo made the pivotal decision to return to school. Choosing education as his lifeline, he began to reconstruct himself. When a diagnosis of acute paranoid schizophrenia threatened his story again, he stayed his course and went on to graduate from UC Berkeley.

    Today, Dr. Apollo Ellis is a renowned expert in computer science and technology. He has earned a Master’s degree and a PhD from the best institutions in the world and worked at many Fortune 500 tech giants like Intel, Apple, Sony PlayStation, and Facebook. 

    In Through the Valley, we accompany him on this journey from the precarious streets, through schizophrenia, to Silicon Valley's pinnacle. It is truly a testament to the power of determination and of an unyielding pursuit of the right to chase one’s dreams.

    Should exercise be the first course of action for people with mental health issues?

    According to recent research by Dr. Ben Singh and his team at The University of South Australia, physical exercise is 1.5 times more effective than medication or counseling.

    So for many this is obvious, the problem is that the people that generally need to be moving their body to affect their mental health aren't the ones doing it.

    There is a benefit in counseling, and at certain times medication is needed. But the question needs to be asked as to how we can get those with mental health issues to implement a consistent exercise regime in their lives.

    The exercise solution to our mental health issues are always available, and the consistent benefits can have a profound effect on our lives.

    Dr. Ben Singh obtained a Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology, Master’s Degree in research, and PhD at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Brisbane.

    Dr. Singh is currently a fellow at the University of South Australia (UniSA’s), Allied Health & Performance.

    UniSA’s Allied Health & Performance deliver high-impact research in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of health issues. We partner with industry to address global health challenges and work collaboratively to solve them. Areas of research strength include pain sciences, rehabilitation, and high performance in sport.

    UniSA’s community clinics provide affordable services to members of the public while giving students valuable opportunities for practical learning. Our clinics include physiotherapy, podiatry, dietetics, and exercise physiology.

    What happens when you mix a poet, political thinker and a special forces soldier all in one?

    You get Robin Horsfall.

    Most of us know the man from his remarkably insightful commentary on complex political situations and global injustices. His writing is insightful, thoughtful and incredibly poetic.

    A lifelong soldier, literally before he was old enough to drink, Robin takes us into his early days of soldering into the life as British SAS and ultimately to his love of the pen.

    Robin is a man of principles, service to family and country, with the view to always seek truth and justice no matter what the sacrifice.

    Born in Farnham, Surrey, UK. Following a divorce from his birth father, his mother Hazel married his step-father, who adopted him and gave him the name Horsfall. A broken family life adversely affected his education, so he left school in 1972 at the age of fifteen and joined the army as a boy soldier.

    Despite a long period of isolation and bullying by his peers, he became a full member of the Parachute Regiment in 1974 and served three tours of Northern Ireland. In 1978 he volunteered for SAS selection and passed on his second attempt in March 1979. He went on to qualify as a Paramedic and Sniper.

    He was a member of the SAS counter terrorist team that assaulted the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980, helping to rescue the nineteen hostages who had been held for six days.

    Robin has had an extraordinary life and has been speaking about it at events both small and large for over 10 years.
