There are times when we are confronted with other people’s problems. We listen to them talk about their lives and sometimes, hear them complain. Many people put pressure on themselves to figure out their path in life when they barely even know who they are. Perfectionism may seem to be a good trait, but when you procrastinate on your plans because you want everything to be just right, this becomes a hindrance to achieving your goals. The real definition of a perfectionist is not someone whose life is perfect, it's someone who believes that it could be, wishes it were and suffers because it isn't.A perfectionist sets very high expectations of themselves and others. They believe that a task is not finished when it does not meet their standards, or they never even begin a task unless they know they can do it perfectly. The standards that they set not only apply to how they work but it is also the same for how they evaluate other people’s performance. In this episode, I want to tell you how perfectionism can slow you down, and why we need to manage it. When we are so focused on a goal, we can forget to stop and take in the big picture. Most driven people tend to zoom in or hyper-focus on their goals and on doing whatever is necessary to achieve them. Paying so much attention to those things means everything else going on around them just fades to black. Being hyper-focused on our goals is a good thing but we don’t want to forget to zoom out as well. Without stepping back or zooming out and looking at the big picture, we may be missing out on what is truly important.  The ability to zoom in and zoom out is a mindfulness practice. This helps with distractibility, anxiety, and focus. We all have stories, stories about ourselves, and stories about others. Some of these stories inspire us or drive us to do better. When our stories strengthen our belief in ourselves, our actions and decisions will reinforce them. If we believe we’ll do well and that we’re beautiful inside and out, these beliefs will be reflected in all that we think and do. But before this happens, before we can truly live in alignment with our full potential,  it is important for women with ADHD to accept that we actually have ADHD.  We need to unload our old story and own up to the reality of being so much more than our anxiety, depression, or perfectionism. Women with ADHD need also to challenge their negative thoughts about themselves and redirect them into thinking of ways to do and be better, without judgment. In doing so, one must be kinder to oneself.Sometimes due to our rough childhood or unfortunate circumstances, we are lead to believe that we should more critical about ourselves in order to do our best. Episode # 8 - Late to the ADHD PartyOne of the reasons that women tend to be diagnosed with ADHD later in life than men is because our symptoms appear to be different but if you look past society’s expectations, just as many girls are likely to be identified as boys.  Women with ADHD, depending on their subtype and especially if their hyperactivity is mental instead of physical, may not recognize themselves as someone with ADHD.  Many women would be considered high-functioning, as well, but they are still falling short of their true potential. Driven women have their own idea and way of how to get things done. Most of the time it is to an extent where the best must be achieved. Others may perceive it as being too much of a perfectionist or demanding. And because of this, most women who work in the corporate world and decide to venture into independent entrepreneurship often find themselves loading too much work for themselves because of hesitancy to ask for help. Working with a business coach has loads of benefits, a particular one would be that with a coach, more perspectives and troubleshooting are covered to guarantee business to run smoothly and be more profitable. Help doesn’t have to be in the form of professional help all the time, though. Small groups or convened communities could also work. But before actually asking for help, you have to first admit that you need one. For women who have put up their own businesses or are about to put up their own businesses or are about to, it’s best to remember that there is no shame in asking for help if you’re having difficulty with work. Don’t be too hard on yourself. You don’t have to carry it all and walk the stairs, you can use a lift every now and then. Most of the time, people take delight or get excited more on the planning part of activities rather than the actual ‘doing’ part. Driven women are particularly not immune to this since they always have places they plan to go to, projects they want to get done, and people they want to meet. If one is not so keen on how to schedule their activities, it may get quite frustrating and counterproductive. Strategic planning allows driven women to provide a proper sense of direction to what they’re doing and crafting troubleshooting solutions in case there are unexpected things that will come into play. Some time in one’s life, you will realize that enthusiasm is not enough to carry a situation or event, especially when you have other people in the boat with you. It takes careful considerations and a feasible plan to work things out without feeling short-handed or frustrated when things don’t go as expected. With neuroplasticity, we are taught that our brain is capable of adapting to change regardless of age. Episode #5 - Driving With The Emergency  Brakes OnMost women with ADHD operate with a fast-moving brain that is difficult to stop. However, since women are more relationship-oriented and tend to follow rules more effectively, they tend to be able to suppress their hyperactivity with an effective and more controlled response to certain situations. A growing number of people, especially women, are opting for the unstable, insecure, risky, and exciting path of working for themselves, either in partnership, collaboration with others, or flying solo. And most of them would choose to do it again, even if they aren't experiencing the level of success they set out for.Choosing the self-employment path typically means financial instability and insecurity, social and emotional isolation, added stress and pressure on romantic/intimate relationships, and increased challenges with mental health, but certain personal attributes may contribute to both choosing the entrepreneurial path and being successful as an entrepreneur.  I don't believe there is one type of person who is destined to be an entrepreneur, nor do I believe that all entrepreneurs are alike. There are many different paths to entrepreneurship and many different personalities that succeed in this lifestyle. One of the things that is the most frustrating to a woman with ADHD is that she usually can’t produce her brilliance on demand.  Try as she might, her creative, innovative, intuitive, out of the box abilities aren’t available to her at all times, like an ATM machine she can always make a withdrawal from.  Sometimes she appears to be an absolute genius at work at life, and other times she feels like a hot mess loser. This can result in a pretty nasty case of Imposter Complex, which is not an actual psychological disorder, but a pretty common cause that holds many bold, brilliant, badass women back from achieving their full potential. In this episode, Diann talks about Imposter Complex and why women with ADHD are particularly prone to experiencing it.
