#20 Paul Gray of Omdia

Today's guest is Paul Gray of Omdia. Paul leads Omdia’s home devices research, which spans television sets, smart homes, consumer electronics, and domestic appliances. His main research area is TV sets, focusing on the European region, broadcast technology, smart TV, and new TV features. Paul is also heavily engaged in researching the development of the Ultra HD ecosystem. Paul first joined Omdia more than 15 years ago. With over 30 years of experience in the TV set supply chain working for NXP and Philips in semiconductors and displays, Paul continues to research the TV business. Among others, Paul has been cited by the Financial Times, Korea Times, Korea Daily, Nikkei, and Le Monde. Paul holds a degree in electrical engineering and a diploma in industrial studies. In this episode, Paul and Brian talked about how the viewing experience is more important than specsmanship, lifestyle effects on viewing patterns, differences between the European markets versus North America, what vinyl records have in common with displays, and the fact that viewers watch content, not screens. Today’s guest is Dr. Eric Virey. In this episode, Eric and Brian discussed Mini-LED and especially MicroLED displays. They covered the definition of mini versus microLEDs, the importance of microLEDs to Apple and their disruptive approach to microLED displays, the Cambrian Explosion in technology including QD-microLEDs, and microLED display adoption trends and product forecasts. MicroLED displays are a hot topic in the display industry and there are very few people in the world who know more about this field than Eric Virey. Eric serves as a Senior Display Market and Technology Analyst at Yole Développement. Since 2009, Eric has contributed to numerous custom projects in the LED, sapphire and display industries and has authored multiple market reports. Eric has spoken at more than 25 industry conferences and has been interviewed or quoted by: The Wall Street Journal, CNN, Fox News, CNBC, Bloomberg, Forbes, MIT’s Technology Review, and Photonic Spectra. Prior to Yole, he held various R&D, engineering, manufacturing and marketing positions with Saint-Gobain in France and the United States. #15 Chirag Shah of Samsung Display Company

Sometimes called "QD-OLED," Samsung's new QD-Display technology combines the Quantum Dots with OLED technology to create a new category of display. This month's guest is Chirag Shah of Samsung Display. Chirag is speaking to us from South Korea, where he leads the go-to-market team for QD-Display at Samsung Display Company. He is a graduate of Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management as well as an Electrical Engineer from Georgia Tech, and he’s passionate about bringing new technology to market. Chirag lives in Seoul with his wife and two boys. When not tinkering with tech, he loves to recreate ancient tandoori recipes in the kitchen. Florian Friedrich of FF Pictures

Today’s guest is Florian Friedrich. Florian lives and works in the Munich area of Germany, where he is CEO of his company, FF Pictures. He is an expert on display testing, color grading, and high dynamic range technology just to name a few areas. Among many roles, he is chair of the HDR Subcommittee of the ICDM. Prior to FF Pictures, he ran an ISO-certified test laboratory, AVTOP, for about 20 years. Florian has collaborated with measurement device manufacturers such as Teledyne and Quantum Data, he’s HDR-remastered over two dozen movies, and he has unique understanding of display requirements for modern content.
