I break down the massive weekend at Gulfstream Park and analyze each of the seven graded stakes races with the Pegasus World Cup leading things off. The showdown between Life is Good and Knicks Go might not have lived up to the hopes of Affirmed and Alydar, but it did give us a dazzling display as Life is Good jumped to the early lead and put away the field with ease as Irad Ortiz Jr. spent the last four strides prior to crossing the finish line stroke the mane of the winning horse. Of course, the card is highlighted by the two Grade I races, the Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational and the Pegasus World Cup that will feature the showdown between BC Classic Winner Knicks Go and BC Dirt Mile Winner Life is Good. In this week’s podcast episode of horse racing news, I discuss updates on trainer news, jockey suspensions, the legacy of an all-time broodmare, and more. I start by reviewing the recent suspensions in New Jersey of trainers Marvin Richards, Bonnie Lucas, and Wayne Potts. This week the NYRA is in the news as part of the Bob Baffert trial that began, in earnest, on Monday and will likely continue through the end of the week. In Pennsylvania, the state racing commission has suspended leading Parx jockey Michael Sanchez for 60 days due to his wagering on races and betting against his horses. Tune in for even more news. The weekend brought us an unbelievable slate of races down in Louisiana at the Fair Grounds but we saw actions from across the country. In today’s podcast, I break down the various stakes races starting with the disqualifications of the runaway winner of the Duncan Kenner Stakes, Just Might, who beat the field by open lengths appearing to win his 8th consecutive non-graded stakes races. That's just scratching the surface of what we talk about in today's episode so listen for even more. Lots of activity in horse racing this week as I break it all down on this episode of The Win Place Show podcast. We start in Mississippi where the statehouse has introduced a bill (HB 588) that would create a state racing commission. In horse racing news, the Louisiana State Racing Commission will meet soon to determine whether they will opt out of the HISA Lasix ban. Over the weekend, the 2021 Eclipse Awards Finalist were announced. In horse news, it’s foal season and aside from being bombarded with adorable pictures of baby foals on your social media timeline, we did see the first foals of two prominent horses over the weekend. Plus the latest jockeying news coming out of New Zealand where the racing commission is reviewing their whip rules due to an increase in recent suspensions associated with the “consecutive strides” rule where you cannot use a crop on a horse on consecutive strides even if those are the only two times in the race you use the crop. I am thrilled to be joined by jockey agent Jose Santos Jr who has burst onto the scene over the last few years and represents riders primarily in the Midwest and south. Jose may be a young man but he’s a horse racing lifer having come from a family where his father and four uncles were all jockeys and his father received national acclaim when he won the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness on Funny Cide. Jose Santos Jr. started representing jockeys at 16 and continued to be a jockey agent while being a full-time college student while earning his degree at Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY. Since starting out, Jose has grown his operation to representing eight jockeys at several different colonies such as Ry Eikelberry at Sam Houston, Reylu Gutierrez at Fair Grounds, in addition to riders at Oaklawn, Turfway Park, and more. In our interview, I talk to Jose about how he broke into the business, how he goes about getting the best rides for his jockeys, the whirlwind around the recent hot streak of Reylu Gutierrez, what his plans are for expansion in 2022, and more. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy my interview with Jose Santos Jr. Links & Socials: Follow Matthew: @FailedToMenace Follow Jose: @joesantos_33 WPS Blogs: https://amalfimedia.com/the-win-place-show  Watch: https://youtu.be/yZIckUsFKzE  Win a $100 Williams Sonoma Gift Card: https://amalfimedia.com/giveaway  __ Subscribe, share, and rate if you enjoyed today's episode! At Laurel Park (MD) racing and training has been suspended until at least Sunday, January 16 because the track is not properly winterized. The New York Times broke a story this week that Bob Baffert and his attorneys are planning on filing a complaint against Churchill Downs Inc. Help is on the way in the form of new HISA CEO, Ms. Lisa Lazarus who was publicly named to the position on Tuesday and will take over responsibilities on February 15, 2022. On the track, there is some exciting news as Mandaloun and Midnight Bourbon are set to kick-off their 2022 rivalry at the Grade II Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds next week. The final piece of news on this week’s podcast is that Joel Rosario is returning to action after being sidelined with a rib injury. This week rang in 2022 and brought with it excitement about the 2022 Kentucky Derby as the weekend featured several stakes races for the 3-year-olds that will look to run their way into history. Before we get to all of the 3-year-old races though, we had a solid Saturday card at Santa Anita with four graded stakes races. In the Joe Hernandez Stakes, we saw Chewing Gum, a horse that had not won a race in 18 months, win in thrilling fashion as he edged out Beer Can Man at the wire. That's just a sneak peek at some of the things we talk about in today's episode. Take a listen for even more horse racing recaps. 2021 featured some amazing horse races across the country and across the world. It saw streaks broken, new faces burst onto the scene, and its fair share of “Oh, my God did you just see that” moments. When compiling this year’s list, I took into consideration several factors: importance of the race, how thrilling the race was, the impact the outcome of the race had on horse racing, and the potential longevity the race will have in the minds of viewers. Obviously, any Top 10 list is subjective and this one is no different. You’ll notice Knicks Go, the likely Eclipse Award Winner for Horse of the Year does not appear in my list simply because Knicks Go typically wins his races with such ease there is little drama unfolding. He’s truly a symbol for how the totality of his races is more impressive than any single performance. With the throat clearing aside, let's dive into my Top 10 races and be sure to share yours in the comments below or on social media and tag me on Twitter at @failedtomenace. In this week’s horse racing news episode, I spend time discussing how weather has impacted the upcoming weekend at Santa Anita as they scramble to reshuffle their weekend cards after canceling Thursday’s contests due to excessive rain. In other news, the Horse Racing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) was unable to come to a governing agreement with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) regarding ground rules for testing starting in 2022. The Christmas Weekend featured an opening day at Santa Anita racetrack in a card that was loaded with talent and six graded stakes races. However, news broke that morning that all of the turf races were to be taken off the turf and run on dirt, which obviously threw a big wrench into several of the stakes turf races. I spend the first few minutes of the podcast discussing how you should adjust your wagers and picks when turf races are taken off the grass and how it impacted the card. Then we dive into the slews of stakes races on the card starting with the Grade II San Gabriel Stakes, which was the race most impacted by scratches, that ended up being a four-horse field. Front-runner Bob and Jackie proved that early speed is the best and was able to hold off a hard-charging Friar’s Road, who has come up just short for the third consecutive race. There are some built-in excuses for Friar’s Road coming up short this time but it’s a worrisome trend and one worth monitoring as he progresses. Tune in to today's episode for even more news. On Sunday, December 26, Santa Anita will have their Opening Day with six graded stakes races including three Grade I races (La Brea Stakes, Runhappy Malibu Stakes, and the American Oaks Stakes). Despite the upcoming holidays, there is still a lot of news coming out of the horse racing industry and I break it all down on this Wednesday’s episode of the Win Place Show podcast. In the United States, the big news was the sentencing of former trainer Jorge Navarro to a five-year prison sentence for please guilty to two counts of conspiracy. Navarro has also been ordered to pay $25.8 million in restitution but details about how the money will be allocated and whether Navarro will be able to even pay a fraction of the restitution is still in doubt. His prison sentence will begin in February 2022. Listen for even more news across the entire industry. This past weekend featured some great performances from across the country. We saw Sweet Melania out-kick Shifty She down the stretch after getting a perfect ride from John Velazquez, the Kentucky Derby Prep race at Remington Park (OK) in the Springboard Mile, some great state-based races this weekend on the east coast with Laurel Park featuring their Maryland Juvenile Championships for fillies and colts, and a lot more.
