In 1993, the year before he became President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela visited Glasgow to thank its people (and those of the other 8 authorities that granted him Freedom of the City) for their support through the years of international campaigning and resistance; all of which contributed to his eventual release from prison in 1990. In this first episode of our second series, we hear from a man who was at the heart of the anti-apartheid campaign in Glasgow and the UK; Brian Filling, Chair of the Nelson Mandela Scottish Memorial Foundation who relives stories from the time and lessons learned. We also visit Blackfriars Primary School to find out how Laura Houston's P7 class explored apartheid, Civil Rights, racism and much more through use of our new FREE 80 page resource, available to download now. This episode was made to sit alongside the resource and to inspire and encourage educators to bring all these issues in to their teaching, whilst making connections to history and current issues and events, locally and globally.  *** We'll soon be releasing a bonus episode with a longer version of our conversation with Brian, which will give even greater context to the story. Subscribe to the podcast to make sure you don't miss it!We'll also be running a CPD to go with the resource - check our website for full details of dates once they're available, or get in touch: enquiries@wosdec.org.ukThe Foundation was set-up to ensure the lessons learned from the anti-apartheid movement and Nelson Mandela's connection to Glasgow are not forgotten. This includes raising funds for a permanent statue of him in the city and doing educational work; the resource being part of that.Extra links you may find interesting include a video of Mandela's visit and a 2018 BBC interview with Brian. Plus, there are more external Nelson Mandela-related links here on the Foundation's site.If you're looking to coincide/inform your teaching with anniversaries connected to Nelson Mandela, then these may be useful:- July 18th Nelson Mandela Day (his birthday in 1918)- Dec 5th (the day he died, 2013)- Feb 11th (release from prison, 1990)If you enjoy the episode, help us spread the word: leave us a review, give us a rating, share, ReTweet, Like & tell your friends! "It is ALL achievable" - so says zoologist Izzie Eriksen as she chats to us about biodiversity, responsibility, fast fashion, the circular economy and her most recent venture, Apparel Xchange; 'a social enterprise dedicated to school uniform reuse', as well as raising awareness of the environmental, social and wider benefits of reducing, reusing and recycling. We pay a visit too to Clyde Primary School and Mr Scott's P6 class as they question why their school lunches include at least 5-6 pieces of single-use plastic. One of our guests from Episode 2, Paul Bradley of SCVO and the SDG Network Scotland, tells us why he thinks the recent upsurge of youth engagement is so positive and we hear from another of Glasgow's young Global Climate Strikers on what she's learnt over the last year and how she feels towards older generations. This is the last episode in our first series - if you'd like to hear a second, help us spread the word: leave us a review, give us a rating, share, ReTweet, Like & tell your friends. 2019-10-0620:51

"This isn't hippy nonsense - this is REAL!" - we talk to some of the 1000s of people on the streets of Glasgow who joined millions around the world for the Global Climate Strike on September 20th. From P2 pupils to Grandparents, we get a sense of why people were out in such force and consider the role that education has to play, with a visit to Learning for Sustainability Scotland in Edinburgh too. Whilst in the capital, we drop-in to Friends of the Earth Scotland and chat to Activism Organiser, Kate Whitaker about what 'climate justice' actually means. We'd love to know what you think of the episode, so leave us a review, give us a rating or get in touch below. And please help us spread the word: share, ReTweet, Like & tell your friends! "It's quite interesting to see how people believe that all Africans are poor helpless people..." - a secondary pupil shares her thoughts on reactions to films in a workshop at one of the events we drop-in on, in this our second episode for Global Citizenship Month. We meet some of the organisations and individuals who make up IDEAS (the International Development Education Association Scotland) - a network of organisations and individuals across Scotland that actively support and promote Education for Global Citizenship. From larger NGOs, like Christian Aid, SCIAF & Oxfam, to much smaller organisations like WOSDEC (and fellow Development Education Centres), Bala Sport & Rainbow Turtle. With the UN's Climate Summit coming to Glasgow in November this year, we joined our friends at Learning for Sustainability Scotland at their event, Feeling the Pressure: Planetary health, participatory democracy and you, as they discussed the Summit, also known as COP (Conference of Parties). So, in this BONUS episode ahead of Series 2, we hear from Caroline Rance, Energy & Climate Campaigner at Friends of the Earth Scotland, who gives us an overview of what COP26 is and suggests ways that teachers can incorporate it into their lessons - including why she thinks it's so important for all of us to learn from others who are coming from around the world. We also hear from Martha and Jessica, two pupils from Muthill Primary, who came along with their teacher, Keri Reid MBE, to share their learning. You can watch the 'Global Goals' video they produced with the Juliet Johnston School in Ghana here. The afternoon session welcomed Dr Alice König and Dr Peter McColl whose Keynote talked us through the RSE's Young Academy of Scotland's Charter For Responsible Debate, via 'liquid democracy' and 'loser's consent'.If you enjoy the episode, help us spread the word: leave us a review, give us a rating, share, ReTweet, Like & tell your friends.
