We welcome Scott Field, Director of Communications at the British Olympic Association, onto this episode. We discuss how communications were led for Tokyo 2020, how TeamGB maintained momentum during the pandemic and how the story was told despite there being no crowds and limited access for press.  Building a career in sport, having worked at football clubs, the FA and now with TeamGB, we ask what the common misconceptions are about establishing a comms career within sport - namely, having an encyclopedic knowledge about a team or sport being essential, when actually good communications skills are the priority.  @scottjfield  https://www.teamgb.com/    This is our last episode of Season3, a mini season for 2022! We are currently working on plans for Season 4 and if you'd like to get involved as a guest, partner or sponsor please email info@threadandfable.com
This episode we speak with Alexa Heinrich on accessible social media. Alexa founded Accessible Social outside of her 'day job' as Social Media Manager for St. Petersburg College in Florida.  With so much content being shared across social media by brands and organisations, the gaps in accessibility are ever apparent, something we wanted to explore with Alexa and understand why as communicators, we should all be building accessibility into our strategies as business-critical, not just as an add-on.  We find out how we can all improve our own social feeds and where we can go to get more help.  @HashtagHeyAlexa https://www.accessible-social.com/ Alexa is also co-founded of Social Media Tea, which is both a hilarious and often heart-warming community of examples, thoughts and issues among those working within social https://socialmediatea.com/home  https://www.instagram.com/sippinsocialtea Alexa mentions https://twitter.com/thewheeloftime  https://twitter.com/USCPSC  Jeep's creative captions https://www.newsweek.com/turn-your-tvs-closed-captioning-surprise-new-jeep-ad-1680056#:~:text=Jeep's%20Super%20Bowl%20LVI,throughout%20their%20time%20on%20screen.
If anyone had predicted everything that's happened in 2022, we'd be surprised! We recorded this live episode as a session at CommsHero week and talked about how to move with the tide of change; both from a broader sense and how that shapes the work we do as marketing and communications professionals, as well as professionally and personally.  https://commshero.com/  We mention... Changes with Annie Macmanus https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/changes-with-annie-macmanus/id1465937091  Jim Hemerling, how to lead in constant change https://www.ted.com/talks/jim_hemerling_5_ways_to_lead_in_an_era_of_constant_change  Worcester Warriors owners blame fans and players https://www.telegraph.co.uk/rugby-union/2022/09/30/worcester-warriors-players-staff-brink-losing-jobs/ Trainwreck: Woodstock '99 on Netflix https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/81280924  Instagram Boycott 2022 https://www.ladbible.com/news/instagram-users-vow-to-boycott-app-20220629
We're back for a short and sweet Season 3, bringing you a handful of episodes to wrap up 2022 with.  First up, we're talking about the influencer campaigns and the impact on supply chain, wondering whether (at times) marketing, comms and operations talk...  We talk about the Adanola range that quickly ran out of stock following a Molly Mae campaign https://adanola.com/ and the Krissy Cela range, which you have to be quick or miss out on https://uk.oneractive.com/ - do these ranges effectively create a hype around them like the Crtz https://www.crtz.xyz/ brand, where drops are meant to be competitive and short lived, or are they potentially limiting customer engagement by often selling out even as a campaign begins?    Rebecca may not be able to pronounce it, but we also talk about the 501% rise in searches of the Negroni Sbagliato following a viral sound on TikTok, clipped from an interview by House of Dragons stars talking about their drink of choice. Stunning.    The cost of living communications focus, finds us listing some of the key principles we think are important as communicators, whether we have an internal audience or include it within external messaging.  A blog Rebecca wrote here on the cost of living crisis impacting students as well as a mention of Dan Slee's blog focusing on public sector comms.    Please rate, review and subscribe and if you'd like to get in touch you can email us at info@threadandfable or follow us on instagram @hyg5m or on twitter @HarrietSmallies and @Rebecca7Roberts

This extended guest episode was recorded as part of our season 2 finale. In this episode, we are joined by two titans of television and entertainment PR who are generally all-around nice guys. Sam Hodges and James MacLeod started their PR career at the BBC together working on shows such as Strictly Come Dancing. They have gone on to have top comms roles at ITV, BBC, Netflix, Channel 4 and Twitter between them.  During our conversation, we talked about what it is really like being at the top, moving a headquarters outside London, making the decision to switch industries from TV to tech, failure, reality TV, Ofcom and the most important question of all, how do shows get picked for Gogglebox.  At the time of recording the podcast, James MacLeod had stepped down as Communications Director at Channel 4, and remained as an advisor on the government’s new consultation relating to the broadcaster's future ownership and its review of public service broadcasting. James started his career at the BBC as a publicist and then later joined ITV, leaving there as Head of Press, Broadcasting.  Sam Hodges is a director at Aaqua. In this episode, we kick off by talking about why sometimes it’s better to document rather than think of a new idea from scratch. Anyone who has heard, watched or read anything by marketer Gary Vaynerchuk, will know that content is all around us and telling compelling stories doesn’t have to be complex.    Our guest this week, is probably best known for his career as a sports broadcaster, Alex Payne although on most weeks can be found co-hosting the top Rugby Podcast, The Good, The Bad & The Rugby with James Haskell and Mike Tindall, in 2017 he founded The Room. Trigger Warning: We do discuss fertility, baby loss and miscarriage in this episode. Feel free to skip it and listen to some of our other episodes, we more than understand. Harriet & Rebecca     In this episode, we talk about the fact that our business public relations, marketing and corporate communication is a people business. Working with people and understanding how to manage relationships is a core part of what we do. Knowing how to do that well can only be a good thing.     Our guest this week, is Emma Gilmartin, Head of Social Media & Student Comms at the University of Glasgow. We start by talking to  Emma about her podcast, Hopes & Dreams Podcast which she started after experiencing baby loss and her own journey with fertility and wanted to use her skills as a communicator to create something to help others. With many large organisations and agencies introducing leave policies for staff who experience a baby loss such as John Lewis and Channel 4 we ask what needs to happen next.    There’s No Such Thing As “Soft Skill” - Simon Sinek https://www.linkedin.com/posts/simonsinek_theres-no-such-thing-as-soft-skills-activity-6785644886205992960-uTsL/  John Lewis Partnership launches new support for working families and young people leaving the care system https://www.johnlewispartnership.co.uk/media/press/y2021/jlp-launches-new-support.html  Channel 4 Pregnancy Loss Policy https://www.channel4.com/corporate/pregnancy-loss-policy   Find Emma  Twitter @embrooksy8 https://twitter.com/embrooksy8?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor  Hopes and Dreams Podcast Twitter @HopesDreamsPod https://twitter.com/hopesdreamspod?lang=en  Hopes and Dreams Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-hopes-dreams-podcast/id1562027218    Season 2 of Have You Got 5 Minutes? In this episode, we talk about great brand collaborations and why they’ve worked.
