The talented pool of Alaskan hockey coaches continues to breed the next generation. After many years of tutelage from some of the best, Nick Walters takes over behind the bench of the Anchorage Wolverines for the 2023-2024 season. Nick has assisted under Rodney Wild (CHS), Matt Curley (UAA) and Evan Trupp (Wolverines). His service under Matt Thomas (UAA) as Director of Hockey Operations and two years with Joel Johnson (USA Hockey) as a Video Coach further increased his development and accent up the coaching ladder. He now blends all of his experience of X’s and O’s, management, recruiting and leader of young men to stand center stage behind the bench at Ben Boeke and in arenas across the county in the NAHL. The pre-interview round table heats up as the Dumpers find themselves in the studio for the first time in 2023. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
At 6’ 5” Tim was the runt in the Molle family growing up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He just didn’t have the physical mass to follow in his brothers footsteps of professional football and Olympic wrestling. Thus, he took the less violent path of…ice hockey. Tim was a larger than life gentle giant in the locker room and on road trips. But, he journeyed from junior to UAA to pro filling all the columns in the box score along the way. Goals, assists and of course, PIMs. After a wild ride in the minors with the Oilers and Canucks organizations he returned “home” to Alaska to assistant coach at UAA and finish out his career with the Anchorage Aces. At that time he joined the Anchorage Fire Department as both a fireman and a player/coach on AFD’s new hockey team.  In 2014 Tim Molle was elected into the University of Alaska-Anchorage Hall of Fame. #AFD #SJHL #UAA #IHL #AHL #anchorageaces #draftkings #3lm #dumpnchangepodcast *Stay tuned to the end of the pod for some bonus material from the recording. The star of his Nunaka Valley Elementary School club team in the 60’s, Mike Ashley went on to cut his teeth in the Saskatchewan Junior League for the Weyburn Red Rings. That rough and tumble, rise and grind experience would pay dividends when he traded his stick for a clipboard. Coach Ashley amassed 10 state high school championships during his tenure behind the bench at Dimond (head), Service (assistant) and South Anchorage (head). He was also an assistant bench boss to Brush Christianson at UAA in the early 80’s and took the helm of the Anchorage Aces for the 1992-1993 season.   Now retired from both coaching and teaching Mike is still heavily involved with USA Hockey as a Pacific District Evaluator for Alaska. He officiates youth/adult hockey and volunteers at high school hockey games as an off-ice official.     The 2019 Alaska High School Hall of Fame inductee has honest and intelligent takes on all the hot button topics about the state of Alaska hockey. Forever the rink rat, this rat has stories. A lot of stories! Kari, that’s right Kari Bustamante… now Kari Ellsworth. The Anchorage Wolverines VP of Marketing and Communications talks all things Wolverines and her roll in helping start a junior hockey program from scratch. The conversation turns to all Alaska sports, growing up in in the AK, ODR’s and to her time in journalism. Kari recaps her days of broadcasting the KTUU Fishing Report and something about catching a big fish (many) on the Kenai River! Queen of the Kenai or creative editing? We debate! You might see her on the river this summer, but in the meantime see what she’s been up to and get an update on the Anchorage Wolverines documentary coming soon. Will the footage from this DNC podcast recording hit the cutting room floor?!? The boys drop names you don’t know or care about. They tell stories you don’t care about. They tell bad jokes in bad taste. They swear too much. They drink too much. And they smell. This pod is a gift to themselves…and their three listeners. *You’ve been warned.    Anchorage Wolverines up-and-coming play-by-play voice Daniel Ramsey joins the boys as a guest/co-host. Hopefully we didn’t bury his career before it really started. Dick and his wife Jeannie said to each other back in 1970, “Let’s do something crazy.” The “crazy” was to pick up and move from their home state of Minnesota to Alaska…or Australia! No offense to the blokes down unda’, but we’re certainly glad they chose Alaska. Hailing from Baudette, MN Coach Thompson played for The Lake of the Woods High School Bears before moving on to the powerhouse University of Minnesota-Duluth. After landing a job at Dimond High School he would assist Head Coach Bernie Simon flooding the rink and drawing up the X’s and O’s. The following year he embarked on a legendary head coaching career at Service High School and would amass 287 wins in 16 years winning multiple Anchorage Cups. Dick was also a key player in the development of one of Alaska Hockey’s historic yet little known clubs, The Alaska Drillers, a high school all-star travel team. Download and enjoy this educational and entertaining pod that details stories of some true Alaska Hockey legends from a legend himself. Turbo was born a minor’s son and raised in the small town of Bovey on the Iron Range in Minnesota. His path from MN high school hockey, to junior, to college to pro was not paved for him. Through hard work and perseverance he cut his own way. The ultimate teammate and world class story teller sits down with the boys and lays it all out.  This pod has it all. Minnesota state history, UAA, pro, Anchorage Aces (early years), punch by punch fight stories, “hockey is a small world” connections, Facebook monologuing, rattlesnake cowboy boots, pool parties and even Macho Man Randy Savage impersonations. He didn’t go 99-1 on his fight card, but he always did “really well”. This was a fun one. Download for your weekend drive to the rink! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Anchorage Wolverines bench boss, Mike Aikens, and the boys break down all the x’s and o’s surrounding the much anticipated inaugural season of the NAHL expansion team. Building a junior program from the ground up takes experience and the Wolverines have found their leader of young men. From the “hockey is a small world” department Coach Aikens and Reido share a path that traces back to Coach Aikens’ home town of Rochester, MN. Swayman left the U. of Maine as college hockey’s best goaltender following the 2020 season. However, NHL COVID protocols kept the Boston Bruins prospect out of the 2020 playoff bubble where he could have gotten practice reps as a Black Ace and soaked up the experience. He used his extended 2020 off-season to hike the mountains and fish the rivers of Alaska training both his body and mind for the next chapter of his career.  Safe to say things worked out pretty good. Grab a beer, some Chowda and download to hear some great on and off the ice stories from his first season stopping pucks as a pro. The boys finally have the technology to reach out and touch someone. They dial up and chat it up with some future in person guests. Anchorage Wolverines signing Jack Kerich talks off season training and taking the jump from U18 AAA to the NAHL. Reido calls his best friend and fellow Junior A National Champion (Rochester Muuuustangs) Todd Huyber. He's easily one of the best story tellers you've never heard of. Last but, not least, they grow the balls to reach out to their holy grail of a guest...the elusive Coach Paul Brauneis!  Learn more about your ad choices. Keith came to Alaska in the fall of 1990 as a Seawolf recruit from Winnipeg, Manitoba. His sophomore season he put up 50 points in 36 games then earned a spot on the ’92-’93 Canadian National Team. Keith returned for his ’93-’94 senior season before leaving again to play pro hockey. In 2003 he found himself back on campus, but this time as an Assistant Coach for UAA. Those early days behind the bench bled into a passion for coaching and development. He has since coached and developed local players at all levels from Mites to U-18’s to High School to Juniors. He now takes on a new challenge in his hockey career by signing on as the Director of Hockey Operations of the Anchorage Wolverines, the newest team in the North American Hockey League. Download on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. Enjoy the story of his journey and hear all about what is happening behind the scenes to bring you junior hockey in Anchorage! #anchoragewolverines #NAHL #UAA #TeamCanada #THPN #dumpnchangepodcast Learn more about your ad choices. The book of Alaska hockey has had many chapters and there is still much to be written. An entire early chapter can be dedicated to Steve MacSwain and how he and his teammates in the 70’s and 80’s blazed the trail for generations to come. Born near the docks during the Seward Fishing Derby in 1965, his path from the pond to the Golden Gophers to pro hockey is remarkable. Grab a breakfast beer and settle in for the ride that is Steve MacSwain’s humbly told story. Save Seawolf Hockey

Save Seawolf Hockey

UAA Head Coach Matt Curley and Asst. Coach Nick Walters dropped by the studio. The parallels Coach Curley draws between his own youth hockey journey idolizing college players to what could be lost for the next generation locally if the program dissolves is spot on and numbing. With possibly the toughest job in all of college sports right now he’s not only a D1 head coach, but also front and center of “Save Seawolf Hockey”. Learn more about your ad choices.
