The £500 million marketing mistake
In 1991, CEO of one of the UK’s largest high street brands lost £500m in value overnight. He almost caused his company to go bankrupt, which ultimately led to his dismissal and a complete company rebrand. In today’s episode of Nudge, I share his story, explaining the psychology behind why this happened and some messaging advice that every marketer needs to know.

The hidden (sexual) symbolism in the McDonald's logo
Is there a hidden sexual symbolism behind the famous golden arches? Yes (apparently). I laughed at this, thinking it was BS, but today I realise I’m probably wrong. See subtle tweaks in logo designs dramatically change how they’re perceived. Today, I talk to Professor Nazuk Sharma as she explains how tweaks to design can make people buy.

Why these irrational prices actually work
Every year $342 billion is spent on bottled water. And yet, for many of those customers a safer version, that tastes the same, is 300x cheaper. Our collective thirst for bottled water is largely irrational. It doesn’t make sense. But so, it seems, are the pricing strategies of several major brands, from fashion, to food, to flights, irrational prices often trump rational approaches. Today, Melina Palmer, host of the Brainy Business, explains why irrational prices surprisingly sell.

Do you have unethical amnesia?
In 2016 Amnesty international revealed how Microsoft, Volkswagen, and Samsung used suppliers with links to child labour. In 2017 BBC’s Panorama revealed how dozens of iPhone workers had committed suicide due to poor working conditions. In the summer of 2023 we learnt that Amazon’s UK division paid no corporation tax for the second year in a row. Did any of these unethical scandals directly affect sales?
Nope.
Today, professor Daniel Zane—who has studied the wilful ignorance customers have towards unethical practices—explains why.

Ten Stars
I heard Nudge advertised on a different marketing podcast. Since I'm fascinated by behavior based marketing, I checked it out. I just binged about 20 episodes and going deep down the rabbit hole. New excited fan!!
The Podcast That Applies Psychology for Everyday Insights
As a listener always looking to enrich my perspective, I was delightfully surprised to discover the Nudge podcast. Hosted by marketer Phill Agnew, Nudge explores the intersection of human psychology and business, distilling scientific research into bite-sized nuggets of insight.
While I don't consider myself a marketing aficionado, I find myself captivated by each episode. Phill has a true talent for making complex concepts understandable and applicable. His smooth voice and witty metaphors make each topic engaging and memorable. I often find myself pondering how a particular "nudge" technique could apply to my own habits and behaviors long after an episode ends.
What I appreciate most about Nudge is how empowering it is. Unlike some business podcasts that feel exclusively tailored towards entrepreneurs, the psychology and influence principles explored in Nudge could benefit anyone. Understanding the subtle ways we make decisions has helped me feel more in control and aware in my personal and professional interactions.
The format also lends itself well to busy schedules - most episodes are 20 minutes or less. But despite the brevity, each one feels meticulously crafted, weaving in scientific studies and guest perspectives for a well-rounded discussion. It's clear Phill does his homework.
I highly recommend Nudge to anyone seeking self-improvement with a side of entertainment. You'll walk away feeling smarter about human behavior - not to mention picked up some sly tips to gently influence those around you. Phill has a rare skill for engaging curious minds while also equipping us with practical tools. Give Nudge a listen - I'm positive you'll get hooked!
