When you started your business, was your goal to become a volunteer in your business because you made just enough money to run the business? Or was your goal to create an income stream that could replace your job, help your family, or maybe give you spending money?I know that I started my business so that I could have an income, and I think you did too. As women in business, it can be really hard to admit that we want to make money. There’s often a mindset issue around money that will keep us from making the money we desire. We may feel shameful or selfish for wanting to make money or maybe unworthy of making it anyway. After moving from Canada to Australia to the US, my guest today realized that she didn’t want to get another qualification to do financial services in a corporate setting. She pivoted, became a personal finance coach, started working with business owners and pivoted again to become a profit coach. She knows all about helping business owners improve their money mindset and make more money! In this episode, I talk to Sam Varner about common limiting beliefs around making money, how common it is to forget to place value in the time and experiences we’ve had to acquire our knowledge, and how your knowledge from investing in yourself trickles down to your clients so it is valuable to them too.In this episode, you’ll also hear:why you should value services around what people are wanting to gain over what you think they’re willing to payhow it’s not just entrepreneurs that may have trouble determining their rates - some professionals share this strugglewhat’s the first step you need to make a money mindset shifthow you process and package the knowledge you’ve gained is valuable to your peoplewhy it’s important to address the balancing act of showing up as a mom and also being successful professionallyThank you for listening!Meet Sam:Without profit, business is just an expensive hobby. When you start a business, it means you know exactly what to say in order to get people interested in what you do and ready to work with you, right? “If you build it, they will come.”Whereas that might be true for some people, I don’t think that true for most of us. We usually start a business so that we can share our genius, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that we know how to communicate it. This is where branding and messaging come in.My guest today has had several businesses with a variety of success until she landed in the marketing field and realized that the words she was using could attract or repel people. Our goal as business owners is to find and share the attractive words, amiright? In this episode, I talk to Kelly Thompson about why messaging matters, why you can’t just copy your favorite influencer and automatically find success, and how to effectively get your message out.In this episode, you’ll also hear:why you need to know who you’re talking to, like super specific and detailed information about that person or those peoplehow market research relates to your message and how to do it intentionallyhow speaking to our ideal client is like speaking to our kids; they each have selective hearingwhy speaking to their pain works better than speaking to the aftereffects of your offeringthe difference between being agreeable and not knowing who you arewhy content isn’t a ‘one and done’ kind of thingthat YOU are the brandwhy enough data is crucial for your business decisionshow to perform an audit on your messagewhy social media is not a marketing strategyThank you for listening!About Kelly:Kelly Thompson is a marketing mentor who helps women monetize their genius, master their message and sell high value offers without being chained to social media. She is the founder of the Waymaker Society, a private coaching program that helps newish coaches unlock the power of virtual events and collaboration to increase their visibility and impact. As busy moms, we know we need to take care of our health, move our bodies, eat foods that fuel us, and have positive self-talk. But just because we know it, that doesn’t mean it’s easy to follow through and actually do these things.Life happens. Work happens. Kid and family stuff happens and distracts us from doing any of those things we know we should do.My guest today is a habit and fitness coach who used to think that exercising was just a part of diet culture. These days, it seems like everyone is using AI, but they’re not always using it correctly. Hint: if you can tell that something was created with AI, then it’s a problem. So many of my clients tell me that they love helping people, but creating content for social media is a challenge. Whether they need to create an Instagram post or reel or a TikTok, they don’t have the ideas, so they feel like they just can’t do it. Are you ready to take action in your business? You might be taking all the courses and reading all the books, but are you actually taking action? As women, moms, and business owners, it can be hard to take action because we naturally fear the results. Someone could say no or reject us. Things might not go the way we want it to or we could fail outright.Instead of taking action, we’ll often take the courses, read the books, and listen to the podcasts so it feels like we’re doing something for our business (because we are!), but it’s the busy work. It’s not action. My guest today is all about taking “messy action” - taking action regardless of the possibility of a no or a failure. She realizes that the results of these actions can be learning experiences, a chance to make changes and try again. In this episode, I talk to Kelly Sinclair about how it’s possible to take messy action for just 10 minutes a day to make an impact, what confidence really means, and why trial and error is so important along your journey as a business owner. In this episode, you’ll also hear:why I think I should wait to visit New Zealand until my kids are olderhow business shifts and changes and evolves over timean example of creative messy actionhow messy action can teach you more than reading about other people’s actions and results, though that has its own value too, in moderationwhat the momentum framework looks like and how it’s cyclicalwhy the results don’t mean anything about you personally as a business ownerhow the more you show up and take action, the more you’ll enhance your competence and confidenceThank you for listening!About Kelly Sinclair:Kelly is an award-winning marketer and brand strategist, visibility maximizer, and a small-town, girl mom of 2. If you wanted to do something in your business and you didn’t know how, would you just try to figure it out on your own? Did you have a corporate position, maybe working the 9-5 with your nose to the grindstone, before you became a mom? It’s not always the easiest life to maintain when you become a mother. Even though moms are amazing problem solvers and are the best at time management since they have to juggle so many schedules, oftentimes the corporate world isn’t so welcoming after they have kids.My guest today held a corporate position with an awesome salary and great benefits but she was uninspired. The positives outweighed the negatives and she would have remained there, except she was let go during the pandemic, during her maternity leave. In this episode, I talk to Maura Walters about how the corporate world and 9-5 model was created for white men (not women!) with people at home caring for their children, why being let go from a job can be a sign from the Universe, and why entrepreneurship is a great alternative to the corporate world for moms.In this episode, you’ll also hear:how traveling during your formative years changes you and some fun life and business #goals that come as a resultwhy you should start by reaching out to your network when you’re looking for your first clientshow it’s necessary to relabel “costs” as “investments” in yourselfthat there’s a distinction between moms who stay home because they want to and moms who stay home because they feel like they have to or were forced out of the workforcehow being at home allows you to be more active in your children’s lives, even if they’re in schoolproof that it’s possible to make more money working for yourself than working in a corporate positionhow setting boundaries around your time both gives you more freedom and makes you more productivewhy talking to other people who have done what you’re planning to do is so helpful for your mindsetThank you for listening!About Maura:Maura Walters is a brand strategist and business mentor for female founders.
