Late last night, police officers carrying zip ties and riot shields stormed an administration building at Columbia University being occupied by pro-Palestinian protesters and arrested dozens of people. Five Republican-led states have sued the Biden administration over its revisions to the Title IX code. In an ever-divided culture, it is our calling to emulate Christ and bring light into the darkness.

Nearly nine hundred protesters have been arrested on US campuses in recent days, about 275 of them on Saturday. Columbia University became the epicenter of the movement, making news when it banned a student protest leader who declared that “Zionists don’t deserve to live.” In these truly perilous days for our nation, let us focus on becoming more like Christ, the light of the world, to combat the darkness around us.

Yesterday morning, New York’s highest court of appeals decided to overturn Harvey Weinstein’s 2017 convictions of multiple sex crimes. The conviction had started the #metoo movement and changed the conversation around how we handle such allegations. When sin turns our stomachs and makes us long for justice, we have a choice on how we process this with others, either in confrontation or conversation.

The Department of Education has unilaterally expanded Title IX of the Civil Rights code’s discrimination protections to include “sex stereotypes, sex characteristics, pregnancy or related conditions, sexual orientation, and gender identity.” The new regulations also require K–12 schools to accept a child’s gender identity regardless of their biological sex and without providing notice to, or seeking approval from, the child’s parents.
