Description

Welcome to the Happy Successful Asians podcast! My name is Joon Kim, and I'm a coach and entrepreneur here to share ideas on how you can smash the societal limitations and chart your own path towards happiness and success. I used to work in Finance chasing my career goals only to fall into depression, struggling mentally and emotionally and questioning where I had gone wrong. But that pain and struggle took me on a journey to seek answers, and as I came across solutions, I had one simple question, "Why hadn't school taught me these ideas and principles?". I felt that school failed to teach me the lessons that I really needed to become happy and successful. Now I'm here to share what I had learned in the hopes that it’ll help you during our time together, plus I wanted to send some happy vibes your way to brighten your day and make you feel better. I'll also bring on fellow Asians who share similar beliefs and values to highlight their stories, struggles, and lessons so that you can smash through the societal limitations and own your life because it's your birthright. So get pumped because this is going to be fun, energetic, and exciting!

What comes to mind when you hear - A Dirty Penny? For me, it was insignificant and unimportant, and that's how I felt most of my life. The craziest part is that I didn't know that's how I felt until I said it out loud in front of a bunch of strangers. On episode 11, I talk about my experience attending a session in Flowmasters where people freestyle and rap to get out of their heads and tap into their hearts to speak their truth. While I had A LOT of fear going into the session primarily because I'm NOT a freestyler or rapper, I learned a part of my story that I got to own and use to help others.Make sure you tune-in to get your daily dose of happy vibes!Find and connect with me on LinkedIn hereFind and connect with me on Facebook hereFind and connect with me on IG hereHAPPY SUCCESSFUL ASIANS COMMUNITY 🌱I'm building a community called Happiness Successful Asians. Christianity was very much embedded in my everyday life growing up in American Samoa, but over the years, I started to question aspects of religion and the church - especially with respect to what was right and wrong, what to believe in and not to believe in, and the unwritten rules to follow scripture.Religion felt limiting, and by the time I reached college, I stopped attending church because I wanted more me (aka Joon) time 😂 These days, I define myself more spiritual than religious and am ALWAYS curious and open to learn about new beliefs and possibilities because I believe that you should believe and do whatever allows you become a better, kinder, and more loving individual. At the end of the day, I do believe that there is a higher power, consciousness, source, or whatever you want to call it, and that it goes beyond the intellectual mind. But I also believe that that same power is within us and that we are not separate from it. And when we tap into that power, we access an infinite intelligence that allows us to experience limitless potential and a sense of oneness with everyone and everything. It’s this state that we are all trying to get back to - regardless of what our beliefs you have - because we are spiritual beings going through a human experience.Tune-in to hear my thoughts and journey from religion to spirituality. Find and connect with me on LinkedIn hereFind and connect with me on IG hereFind and connect with me on Facebook hereHAPPY SUCCESSFUL ASIANS COMMUNITY 🌱I'm building a community called Happiness Successful Asians. What's the ONE thing that transformed my life? It's not a secret, but before I share it with you, I ask that you be open to the idea. And that ONE thing is meditation. In 2016, one of my seniors scolded a colleague for something that wasn’t her fault. I expected her to fight back telling our senior that she didn't have anything to do with the situation, but she ended up taking on the blame without a fight. As a frustrated observer, I asked why she didn't do anything, but her demeanor and response to the entire situation completely blew my mind. She was so chill and nonchalant about everything and went on to say that it wasn't a big deal. For the first time in my life, I saw someone in complete control of their emotions, so I instantly wanted to know how she did it. And the answer to that question was meditation. Incorporating meditation into my life has changed everything, so today, let's dive into the benefits of meditation:Editing/Subtracting limiting beliefGaining clarity over what you wantExploring a world outside of your current constructTapping into infinite sourceOvercoming fearAnd when it comes to forming any habit, it helps to start by by mastering the art of showing up - even if it's just 5 minutes a day. Be consistent and embrace the process because once meditation becomes a part of your identity you'll unlock a power beyond your imagination.Find and connect with me on LinkedIn hereFind and connect with me on IG hereFind and connect with me on Facebook hereHAPPY SUCCESSFUL ASIANS COMMUNITY 🌱I'm building a community called Happiness Successful Asians. It pisses me off when I think of the traditional schooling system because we spend a good chunk of our lives in school, yet it does a shitty job preparing us for life's biggest challenges and teaching us how to be happy. The educational system tests our intelligence based on a limited set of criteria, it discourages mistakes and failures which are necessary for growth, and it prevents us from exploring our curiosities by promoting a culture of obedience, fitting-in, playing small, and following the status quo. And the crazy thing is that we Asians are born with a PhD in all of this growing up in our culture. And when you think about relevant skills, where were the classes on managing your emotions, navigating social dynamics, learning home economics, or acquiring financial literacy? We go through these experiences every day, yet most of us graduate from school, get thrown into the world, and need to figure it out on our own.So what's the solution? I honestly don’t know have the answer yet, but I’m working to gain clarity through my coaching journey by gaining the right experience and meeting the right people. I believe that one experience will lead to another, and this will also allow me to create a ripple effect to inspire a new generation of people who change the system in their own ways. Find and connect with me on LinkedIn hereFind and connect with me on IG hereFind and connect with me on Facebook hereHAPPY SUCCESSFUL ASIANS COMMUNITY 🌱I'm building a community called Happiness Successful Asians. Happiness and Success is an INSIDE JOB because you get who you are in life not what you want. So whatever you experience comes back to your perspective / mindset / paradigm on how you see and show up for the world. But one of the biggest challenge is that A LOT this was influenced by societal expectations and limitations. You come into this world with a blank canvas, but as you experience life, people start drawing on this canvas - defining what happiness and success means for you and telling you what to believe and not to believe in. At some point, you have to question and edit these definitions and beliefs to determine what continues to serve you and what no longer serves you. So the first half of life was about accumulating, and the second half is about editing to re-define and re-imagine the beliefs, stories, and values that will serve you more.So start to asking yourself, "If no one was watching and if I was doing exactly what I wanted to do personally and professionally, what would I do, what would I try, what would I explore?" because that's what happiness and success is about.Find and connect with me on LinkedIn hereFind and connect with me on IG hereFind and connect with me on Facebook hereHAPPY SUCCESSFUL ASIANS COMMUNITY 🌱I'm building a community called Happiness Successful Asians. Hello Happy Successful Asians listeners! This is the first official podcast episode and I'm so excited you're here.In this episode, I talk about identity crisis because I was immersed in a limbo of different cultures growing up as a Korean living on a pacific island called American Samoa then moving to the United States to attend college. And I feel like this is an experience A LOT of us Asians go through as a third culture kid.I bounced between different cultures - Korean, Samoan, and American, and when I came to the US, I went through all sorts of new experiences - saw snow for the first time, got shouted at for saying hella, didn't know the right lingo, had an Asian/Island accent, and didn’t know anyone except my brother. After graduating from university, I went into the corporate world, experienced mental and emotional challenges, then pivoted to become a coach, entrepreneur, and digital nomad to help others. Now, I’m owning and examining my unique identity and story because it's important to own and embrace the beautiful journey and experiences that's unique to you. It's what makes you special, and it's what allows you to share your essence with the world. So celebrate your identity and story because it's YOUR special gift.Find and connect with me on LinkedIn hereFind and connect with me on IG hereFind and connect with me on Facebook hereHAPPY SUCCESSFUL ASIANS COMMUNITY 🌱I'm building a community called Happiness Successful Asians.
