In this episode of The Jasper Blueprint podcast, Bessi shares common challenges leaders face on the journey toward sustainable success in business. If the last few years have thrown you off your game, this episode will shed light on potential causes as well as practical solutions for you to reclaim the reins in your business. Consultants and advisors are promising to help small and medium businesses navigate the current climate, but more often than not they fail to deliver. As a result, business leaders are falling into one of two unhelpful responses: overwhelmed by the speed of change and demoralised by not knowing how to respond in a way that delivers results and makes commercial sense, many choose to do nothing. The second common response is not even to begin exploring but instead stick with “business as usual” and wait and see. Bessi runs through the risks of these approaches and offers an alternative based on a broader understanding of risk and return.     Also in this episode: It is important to get “fresh eyes” on your business model to identify low-hanging fruit in your business. How clarity on foundational elements will save you massive amounts of money when engaging external experts. In this episode of the Jasper Blueprint podcast, Bessi navigates the complexities of leading a strong business in an ever-changing and demanding environment. We dive into the critical task of reevaluating deeply rooted assumptions about the fundamental role of business, specifically highlighting the intersection of money and meaning in business. This conversation aims to inspire a profound reflection on how financial success and ethical purpose can and should coexist within your company’s strategy. Bessi asks you to reassess the foundational aspects of your business — its mission, vision, values — and your articulation of how you will achieve sustainable growth, financial stability, and resilience in the face of change.   Also in this episode: Business success does not have to be a zero-sum game; your company can thrive financially while maintaining an ethical backbone and meaningful purpose. Decisive leadership often flounders due to a lack of clarity and articulation of the business's foundational elements—vision, mission, values—and these need to be redefined and communicated for effective navigation through turbulent operational environments. A business model that focuses on delivering value and results, rather than cost reduction or mere profit maximisation, can rejuvenate your experience of your business and lead to sustainable, long-term success. Engaging in deep reflection and intentional decision-making based on the identified patterns of your leadership and behaviours across the company can empower you to reclaim your ability to make decisive, impactful moves. In this episode of The Jasper Blueprint podcast, Bessi dives into the compelling concept of merging financial success with a purpose-driven business approach. The episode unravels the inherent potential in businesses to be a force for good, without sacrificing profitability. Bessi introduces listeners to a dichotomy she calls The Two Camps Trap. This way of thinking drives the often subconscious beliefs business leaders hold about the purpose of business, limiting their ability to make more money .   Also in this episode: Business leadership involves an understanding of the connection between what makes you profitable and your part in taking  responsibility for your decisions.  The Two Camps Trap sheds light on the limitations of a belief that business should focus solely on profit-maximisation and treating contribution as sitting external to the business. Integrating "money" and "meaning" in business operations can enable you to leverage significant competitive advantages. The design phase of a product sets in motion 80% of its  environmental impact, providing business leaders with massive opportunities for positive change through innovation.   Subscribe to the Jasper Blueprint podcast: Apple Podcast | YouTube | Spotify Connect With Bessi Graham: Website | | LinkedIn | Instagram   About Bessi Graham: With nearly 25 years’ of experience working with business owners, governments, and large funding bodies to merge money and meaning, my experience spans from the grassroots of sitting in the dirt working with business owners across the Pacific Islands through to the United Nations in Geneva. ESG Strategy (Part 1): Using Mandatory Climate Reporting As A Competitive Advantage For Your Business
In this episode of Both Success and Integrity with Bessi Graham, Bessi dissects a recent Harvard Business Review (HBR) article "Should Your Start-Up Be For-Profit or Nonprofit?", and discusses why the author completely misses the mark on legal structures as well as identifying the actual problems for startups. The HBR article proposes a framework that founders, board members, investors, and donors can use to make a decision around the legal structure the start-up should use.  Bessi critiques the article's binary approach and the author’s misnaming of the key problem as a legal structure issue rather than properly addressing how deeply and unconsciously they are wedded to the old paradigm of abstraction and false distinction. She also challenges their claims about the conflicts between social mission and venture capital and argues firmly against their recommendations that entrench dangerous and exploitative power dynamics.   Also in this episode: The problem with the old paradigm lies in the unquestioned acceptance that doing good and making money are mutually exclusive. The limitations of hybrid organizations. Understanding business modeling is key to creating impactful organizations. Nonprofits often encounter certain pitfalls when creating a viable and long-lasting business model. The dangerous consequences of the entrenched views around not valuing “caring roles” and the parallel between the gendered “othering” of unpaid labor and not paying people properly in the charitable sector.   The Harvard Business Review article: Should Your Start-up Be For-Profit or Nonprofit?
