The deadly $350B black market for sand. Yes, sand.

Sand trails water as the second most used natural resource on earth, meaning that it too is getting scarce. The material is used mainly for concrete, glass and asphalt and is a staple of any city structure. But why can’t we just take more from our vast deserts? And what’s with all the organized crime around it? Plus: Peloton’s CEO steps down and the jury is out on the TikTok ban.

LinkedIn wants you to connect…over games

The professional network recently launched a few games, which range from word association to trivia, onto its app and site. But why would LinkedIn make this move and what’s in it for them? Will Walmart’s new premium groceries attract wealthier customers?

Will Walmart’s new premium groceries attract wealthier customers?

From three years of inflation, big companies like Walmart, McDonald’s and more are seeing low-income consumers at their breaking point. For instance, Walmart just introduced a new line of premium groceries to appeal to trendier and higher income shoppers. So have big companies given up on less wealthy consumers? Plus: McDonald’s quarterly sales are down and Instagram pushes smaller creators.

The Veterinary industry coughs up $38B

The Veterinary industry coughs up $38B

Pets are family, but would you spend a fortune to keep them healthy? Many private equity firms are banking on it. The veterinary industry has seen huge investments from big financial players since 2017, but this “low-risk, high-reward” industry is just at the tip of its earning potential. So who owns the clinics and how can they charge so much? Plus: Amazon is getting scary good at next day shipping and Tesla is back on the rise.

Went down fast

"What's going on on business and tech". The show has been going down fast. Nothing to do with the initial episodes with more and better content and comments. Currently, the hosts, while they have a good idea of marketing and advertising (and "content creation"), they miss many of the business "why's" that are behind. On the tech side, they display a lack of technical knowledge as they fail to grasp the concepts, and the implications of technologies. Two stars because you still get some news and info that you are unlikely to get on the FT, WSJ, MIT, etc, podcasts. Those are somehow interesting. A real turn-off is that the host seem to think that everyone works doing the same as them, writing stories in a co-working space, Starbucks, or at home. Again, their idea of businesses is completely askew. For you to write about all these stories, someone needs to make that happen, CEOs, techies, bankers, investors, accountants... The constant whining of some of the hosts is also quite unbearable. Again, get a real job then, and you will understand what you are trying to write about. Interestingly enough, they share that they (some) have never worked in an office or any other business before. To be able to write about stuff, you need to have done your time and know about it. Unfortunately it is one of many podcasts with self-appointed experts that they really don't know much about anything (except "content creation" based on real journalist's stories).
Update on today's episode (I still listen once in a while). JBR "why are these gaming companies reducing staff and focusing on growth? Are they trying to make the shareholders happy? I don't get it". You don't get it? That is what CEOs have to do in publicly traded companies. That is companies/markets 101. If a podcast of business and tech doesn't get it... Maybe should not be talking about these topics

Business news has never been so entertaining

This lively, sprightly, fast-paced show actually makes business news fun. And one of the ways this show’s stable of hosts make business news fun is by offering opinionated takes on off-the-beaten-path or under-the-radar subjects. If this is what the money the company I work for spends on HubSpot goes towards, then yeah, spend more of it.
