Ep132 The Bonfire Moment, with Martin Gonzalez, Google HQ Org Dev

Most startups fail not because of a bad product, poor timing, or mismanaged cash, but because of people problems: conflicts over strategy, decision-making, and team culture.
Martin Gonzalez co-authored ''The Bonfire Moment'' with Josh Yellin; the book launches today. Get it here: https://www.bonfiremoment.com/

Even the smartest entrepreneurs have been derailed by soft problems:

How do you fire a loyal friend who’s not up to par?

How do you motivate your team to give their all?

What happens when egos and emotions overpower facts and reason?

    ===
7 key strategies are cornerstones of The Bonfire Moment feedback structure:

    1 Treat people like volunteers
2 Protect the team from distractions
    3 Invite disagreement
    4 Minimize unnecessary micromanagement
    5 Preserve interpersonal equity
    6 Keep pace with expertise
    7 Overcome discouragement
    ===
    4 TRAPS –
    The trap of Speed
The trap of the Inner Circle
The trap of the Maverick Mindset
    The trap of Confidence

Why maverick ideas can lead startups into trouble?
What are the 6 most common maverick beliefs?

    1. The myth of equal equity: Co-founders should receive equal equity in return for
    equal commitment and equal contributions.

    2. The myth of shared command: Power and decision-making should be shared equally among cofounders.

    3. The myth of scaling without hierarchy: Layers of management should be
avoided as the company grows, because they create bureaucracy and slow progress.

    4. The myth of structural harmony: Disputes between functional roles represent
a failure point that should be fixed.

    5. The myth of conflict-free growth:

A strong culture should be able to minimize or even prevent all interpersonal conflict, even as the team grows.

    6. The myth of sustained heroics: Heroic extra effort is necessary for the long
haul, not just during the startup’s earliest months.

The Bonfire Moment has proven effective with hundreds of teams of all sizes around the world—from the smallest startups to large organizations—significantly improving their cohesion, focus and effectiveness.
Now this book teaches leaders the principles behind The Bonfire Moment and how to run the workshop on their own. It’s ideal for anyone who needs a committed and resilient team to achieve big goals.

Ep130 Feedback: Giving and Receiving, with Mel Kettle

Ep130 Feedback: Giving and Receiving, with Mel Kettle

Episode 130 is with Mel Kettle, author of "The Social Association" and "Fully Connected'.

    TALKING POINTS

Not only do you give feedback down, you give it across and you give it up as well.
Giving feedback is one skill set, while how to receive feedback is just as important.

When you hear the word feedback, how do you react? “Feedback” is one of those words that can be polarizing and cause panic.
I encourage leaders to create a culture of conversation within their organization so that they never have to use the word feedback.

How do I have a conversation with my manager who doesn't listen?

If you don't have a trusted relationship with your manager, then that's going to be a difficult conversation. What do you do when you're on the receiving end of that difficult conversation?

Mel Kettle has a five-step feedback framework.

Ep129 - Working Async, with Lynne Cazaly

Ep129 - Working Async, with Lynne Cazaly

Ep129 we speak with Lynne Cazaly and her book, "Sync Async"
making a distinction between synchronous and asynchronous work.
The author urges people to consider more asynchronous ways of working.
There will always be too much to do and not enough time to do it. Putting practical sync async techniques to work can make your work easier . . . and the rest of life better.
    Consider:
    ·     Do we really need everyone at the same meeting at the same time?
    (synchronous work)
    ·      Could some people contribute prior to, or after the meeting or begin working on tasks outside of a meeting? (asynchronous work).
A growing number of teams and businesses are learning and experiencing the value of deliberately working in sync / async ways.
That is, some work is completed synchronously - at the same time with other people; and other elements of work completed asynchronously - at a time and in a way that suits them.

In this conversation with author Lynne Cazaly, we discuss how, why and when to work in sync and async ways
    ·      tools for making great async progress
    ·      ways to identify the type of work you prefer
    ·      how to make daily progress easier - get started on things that
have stopped and accelerate things that have slowed.
You don't need to wait for a culture change or for someone to give
you the go-ahead on this. You can start working better in both sync and async
    ways from today.

    ABOUT LYNNE CAZALY
Lynne Cazaly from Melbourne, Australia, is an international keynote speaker, award-winning author and master facilitator.
Lynne is author of 10 books including:

Ep127 - VUCA leadership, with Dan Silberberg

Ep127 - VUCA leadership, with Dan Silberberg

In Episode 127, I speak again with Thought Leader and Visionary Dan Silberberg around the evolving role of leadership in a world of disruption.
There’s a shift from focusing solely on productivity to valuing intelligence as the key competitive advantage.
Multiple areas of disruption can be described with the VUCA framework.
A leader’s full time job is global volatility.
Another full time job is global uncertainty and unpredictability.
Another full time job is unraveling complexity.
And then the last one, just in case you didn't have enough to deal with, is ambiguity.
The traditional hierarchical model is insufficient for dealing with such complexities. Dan advocates for an ecosystem approach where leaders become facilitators rather than top-down decision-makers.
To be a great leader requires critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and lifelong learning. We need authentic organizational values, hiring based on cultural fit, personal authenticity in interviews.
Leaders need to adapt to the rapidly changing landscape by fostering innovation, embracing ndiversity, and building trust within their organizations.
